Halloween 2010

In past years, I'd pretty much decided that I didn't like Halloween. What a silly holiday. It's fun to get dressed up, but it's just a lot of sugar, a lot of work, and not really celebrating anything.

However,

this year I had a change of heart. :)

Friday night we went to Hazel's school carnival. The girls loved getting dressed up and loved playing the many games. It was crowded and loud, but they all had fun and for all the work that costumes seem to be for ME, I'm glad that they get to wear them more than once! :)

Somehow we didn't get a good picture of all the girls at the same time, the entire weekend. :)
Such cute girls!
Hazel, although she looks like a bat (that we've seen before :) from this angle,
is actually a DRAGON. Her tail and her spikes are hiding behind her. :)
Lilie is a WIZARD. Not a lizard or a witch. She was very specific
about being turquoise blue with yellow stars. :)
Elsie. What would Elsie want to be?? Oh yeah. What else? THE Princess.
And Violet. Although she looks like a CLOWN,
she was actually the Court Jester of our Medieval group. LOL!

I really loved watching our girls go from door to door. Hazel led the way, running the whole time and kicking up her tail behind her. Lilie trailed behind, holding on her hat and obviously entertaining her own wizardly thoughts. Elsie brought up the rear, fluttering around daintily and watching all the other "creatures" we encountered. She was enchanted with every other princess we saw and chatted with all the door openers. :) She remembered to say "Fant Tyou" and "Happy Halloween!!" at every door. :)

They were SO cute!! It also helped that it wasn't freezing cold this year! :) Nels and I had such a wonderful night with our little ladies!

And the winner is . . .

Four o'clock in the morning?

No big deal. Who cares when I may just be the best mom in the whole entire world?

Dancing to the theme music of "Psych" over and over (still not sick of it "I know, you know . . . ") and making "MaGiC" . . . the only way to spend the nights preceding Halloween.

Being Behind

No this is not a post about our trip. No this is not a post about our family pictures. No this is not a post about any of the projects that I've done in recent months, weeks.

There's a lot to catch up on; that I WANT to blog; that I WILL post. Not today.

Just read a post today about a gal who has a baby a couple of weeks younger than Vi. She wrote about how she's pretty sure it was just yesterday that she was born. Asking her readers if it always goes by that FAST. She wrote: "Because if it is true, I am going to get some masking tape tonight and tape my eyes wide open so sleep won't rob me of a decent passage of time." LOL! What a great post. I can totally understand the feeling. It was a sweet post and her baby is adorable. I was fine. Ready to go on with my day.

Then I read the comments.

Mothers confirming that it DOES go by that fast. Crying because they'd just put their child on a plane yesterday to leave on a mission or to go to college all the way across the country.

And then I got teary.

My babies, while still young, are growing up. Hazel is SEVEN! Violet is now nearly 8 months old!!! And before I know it, life will change and they'll no longer be little. Violet will be four and then she'll be eight. Before I know it Hazel will be twelve and then she'll be dating. (And of course the other two in between!) They'll all slowly leave our nest. Ready to fly.

{{sigh}}

I love being a mom. It is truly my greatest challenge and my greatest joy. I certainly don't do everything perfect, but I'm doing my best and I know that that is good enough.

And so I'm going to blog all those recent, wonderful memories that we've had. Because if I don't, one day I'll wake up with my flawed brain and not be able to remember. It will be lost and gone. My kids will be grown and I won't remember what it was like to have them need me and trust me and look at me like they do. I won't remember what it feels like to hold them close and watch them sleep. To whisper to their lovely little faces how much I love them. How thankful I am for their patience and forgiveness. To feel their tiny little hands in mine and have them say, "I love you, Mommy." To watch their wonder as they discover something new.

Life will change and be different. Wonderful still, but what is NOW will be gone, if I don't record it. And I don't want to forget. What a beautiful life I'll have in years to come if I get to take with me the good from today and add to it the good that will be tomorrow. Over and over. To where I can look back on a life filled with happiness and joy. There will the difficulties and the sorrows, but as long as we stay close to the Lord, those things will just add to the fullness of life.

So updating is coming. I just need to get the Halloween costumes finished first. :)

Day of Rest

Ah. Home again.

Do you ever really feel ready to leave your vacation? To leave the beach? The hotel suite where someone else comes to make the beds and wash the towels and clean the bathroom? No one has to go to work or even think about it. {{sigh}}

We pulled in this morning at about 3:45 am. Our lovely house welcoming us home. But it was cold in our little Idaho house. And the heater hadn't been turned on in the past 3? 4? months. The air filter HAD to be replaced before we could fire that baby up. Off Nels went to Walmart at 4:00 in the morning, after driving 650 miles, through four states, to by a filter. What a man. :)

The day has been spent sleeping and watching movies. Not the most worshipful way to spend a Sunday, but certainly a day of Rest and Gratitude.

Oh, I love my family. What a fabulous week it's been! Lots of fun and adventures. :) Man. I think I could LIVE on VACATION.

The Life

What a wonderful family I have!

The trip was long, but considering, it went very, very well. We're so happy to be here and it has so far been fabulous to spend this time together. No house to clean, no laundry to fold, no WORK. We all get Nels - totally uninterrupted. That rarely happens. It has been SO nice.

Today, quick stop at the beach, then Sea World! Hooray!!

Stewed

We're leaving this afternoon. I've been cleaning and packing and organizing and listing and cleaning and washing and folding and cleaning and washing for more than a week to get ready. We're all so excited. (Also thankful for sweet friends and neighbors that are willing to keep an eye on our house and animals while we're away. :)

I got up early this morning to complete all the little things that need to get done before we can leave our house for a week. One of those things is to can the tomatoes sitting in my fridge and garden. I've slaved over these babies all. summer. long. And if I don't get them put up before we leave, what's ripe now will be spoiled by the time we get back. I've worked too hard for that to happen. So regardless of other things that need to get done, I'm just going to have to slow down and spend some time in the kitchen this morning, canning and then cleaning up tomato seeds. :)

So as soon as it was light outside I grabbed Lilie and Violet (the two who like to be awake before the sun comes fully up) and headed out with a bucket to the garden to gather up all my little ripe gems. They're so beautiful and cold and it's lovely to walk through my garden and see the fruits of my labors.

In we came to wash, blanch, peel, cut. Into the jars. Red and lovely - with spatterings of yellow from the random yellow tomato plant that somehow showed up in my garden. Beautiful.

Into the canner, just waiting on the last jar.

Then.

A faint, brief cracking sound. {{Dread}}

I gently pick up the jar that I thought the sound came from, inspecting it for cracks. Nope. Looks lovely and sound.

Hmp. Whatever.

Pick up the other jar, just to give it a look-over for good measure.

Then the bottom of that jar breaks off and spills an entire quart of my hard earned tomatoes and precious pre-vacation time into a simmer pot of water.

@#$@!  #@#$#%!

{{{sigh}}}

{{{sigh, again}}}

Tomorrow I'm gonna be sitting on the beach. Watching the Pacific waves crash against the white sandy beaches of San Diego. Tomorrow I'll be at the beach. Tomorrow I'll be at the beach . . .

My Soul is Happy

I've genuinely got much more pressing things to do today than spend time blogging, but I miss my baby and I need to record a little bit of what's going on in our lives and in my brain.

I {love} Fall. Winter is always wonderful, with all the wonderful coziness that comes with cold weather. Summer is fabulous with lazy hot days and lots of busy fun. But in the bottom of my heart I hold a special, special place for Spring and Fall. I love the rebirth of Spring. I love the closing that comes with Fall. I love seasons.

This Fall has been particularly beautiful. A gift from the Lord, since Spring was so -- well, un-Springy. It's been lovely. Highs in the 70's most days and not freezing yet at night. I've been loving it.

A few weeks ago, right before our "Fall Birthday Week," we headed down to Salt Lake to go to the Barnum and Bailey Circus with my sister and her family and my parents! It was SO fun and well worth the money and time. The girls were in awe the entire show. There is nothing better to me than watching my girls' faces light up with amazement. SO fun! Lilie LOVED the high wire and the trapeze artists. Well, almost anything where they were high up in the air. :) All of it was incredible.

I also got to go to Relief Society Conference with my mom, sisters, and sister-in-law. What a beautiful experience. I felt absolutely overwhelmed with gratitude for the amazing women that I have been blessed with having in my life.

Hazel and Lilie have been loving school. Those smart little chickies just soak up all the learning that they can. They love their teachers. I still don't think Lilie has learned anything new in Kindergarten, but she has lots of fun and has finally remembered some of the names of the kids in her class. :) (For more than a month, when I'd ask her who she played with that day, she didn't know. She couldn't remember a single child's name. :) She was just too darn busy having fun that she didn't think to ask anyone their names!) Hazel loves everything about school --- except having to get up early. :) She is an EXCELLENT reader and has finally learned to do her homework in less than 3 hours! Ha. Ha. We'll just suffice it to say that she is slowly learning to overcome perhaps her biggest obstacle in life thus far. Focusing on one thing at a time. :) Although I still can't say whether or not I feel that homework is necessary for 1st Graders, it has been good and it's really wonderful to be able to actually see her working on the things she's learning at school. It's been awesome to watch her progress over the past month and a half. I'm so proud of her!

Elsie is my little shadow all day. She loves helping. She misses her sisters while they're gone, but I dare say that she really likes just being with me and Vi, too. Even if I spend a lazy morning blogging or whatnot on the computer, most of the time, she just rolls around on the ground in my bedroom - pestering Violet or talking or admiring her beautiful self in the mirror. :)

Violet is getting more and more mobile by the day. She crawls everywhere - fairly fast now - and pulls herself up to everything. At her last appointment, she was nearly 18 pounds (a feat not accomplished by any of her sisters before they were a year old!) - in the 70 percentile for both height and weight. She is such a happy little bug and smiles from ear to ear all day long. She is such a perfect baby! Our little Smiley Violey. She babbles quite a lot. Ba-ba-ba-ba. Da-da-da-da. And most recently Ma-ma-ma. But she only says ma-ma when she needs something. :) Typical, right? :) I stopped nursing about a month ago. She's had no problem with a bottle and LOVES eating solid foods. It's been wonderful - as it gives me a little bit more freedom. She's also a great sleeper, for the most part. Like I said, she's pretty much a perfect baby. She makes me think that I could just keep having babies forever. :)

The transition in life to having a new baby is always taxing -- whether with #1 or #4, but I must say, having four children is lovely. It seems that by #4, I've learned to relax about all the things that first-time moms STRESS about. -- All those things that baby books make out to be of UTMOST importance. I just love her. I love having a little baby to snuggle. I love the way that she looks at me and needs me. I love her little sounds and her soft little body. I've loved each of my babies fiercely (still do, of course), but at this point in my life, I feel much more able to just roll with the inconveniences and just love it all. Life is so very, very good.

I have four beautiful, healthy, smart, and unique little girls. I get to stay home with them everyday. And daily work on overcoming my own shortcomings and pitfalls. Slowly learning how to be the woman I truly desire to be. I have a wonderful husband who is my very best friend in the whole world. I could never say enough to express my love and gratitude for him. At times I genuinely feel the stress of daily life seeping into our relationship, sometimes I feel like I've barely talked to him in months! But then life slows down a little bit again (maybe or maybe not) - or maybe more than anything I start to focus on how grateful I am for him and start to look for more ways to serve him. That always seems to magically fix any distance I'm feeling between us.

In the coming weeks, we're planning a family vacation!! I'm SO EXCITED!! I'll tell you all about it later, but I've made reservations and lists and lists and lists. I'm so looking forward to having this uninterrupted time with my husband and my girls. It's going to be awesome. Nels, I'm sure, will be working right up until the minute we leave (that always seems to be the case), which leaves me to plan and pack and organize almost entirely by myself. Yesterday I was feeling incredibly overwhelmed by the unfairness of this prospect, but today is a new day. The beds are made, the floor is vacuumed, the dishes are in the dishwasher, the family room is SO clean (thank you Nels and Hazel!) and now I'm ready to tackle my mountains of laundry and my piles of To-Do's and To-Packs and To-Buys.

Maybe & Daisy

Is there such thing as a quick, easy project? I've determined that at my house -- in my brain -- there is not.

But.

That's okay. Especially when said project is for a Birthday Princess. My sweet little "Daisy" (Elsie's alter-ego Princess) turns three today.

Really? Only three? With my older girls, each year they get older seems to just sneak up on me. How could they be that old??! But with Elsie, I think she was born five years older than me.

Sometimes I think the "difficulties" that we have in our relationships with our children stem from the fact that we have eternal relationships with them. I believe that we all knew one another in our pre-mortal life and maybe, just maybe, the relationships that we have to fit into HERE, were not the relationships that we had THERE. And sometimes the relationships of parent and child are hard to adjust to.

I think probably Elsie was older than me before we came to Earth. :)

Maybe she should be the mom.

Sometimes I think she knows this too. When she tells me things like:

"Mom, when I was the Mom and you were the kid . . . "
For a while she was saying such things often.

Then again, she has also said things like:

"When I was the Mama School Bus, and you were the Baby School Bus . . . "

So you know . . . maybe not.

Happy Birthday, Daisy! I love you so much!
